Trapping with a big hand pre-flop, by Alex Kravchenko

One of the most important strategies in MTTs is varying your game. That means that in similar situations with similar hands you must occasionally play a different way. For example, when you have a big hand pre-flop and there's a raise in front of you, sometimes you re-raise and sometimes you just call.

I think there are two major factors that affect your decision. First is your opinion about a raiser - you must be more willing to call against a loose aggressive player who is bluffing a lot after the flop. Also this kind of player is raising with a lot of hands pre-flop, so it's harder for him to outdraw you. And after all, if your image is solid, he will fold almost always when you three-bet (things are different if you are re-raising a lot - in this case may be three-bet is the better option, because you can expect a four-bet re-steal attempt).

The second factor is: Who is sitting behind you? If there are a couple aggressive players there then you can try to provoke them to squeeze after you call. This is one of the most profitable situations in tournament NL Hold'em, when somebody puts a big three-bet raise on a bluff, then you move all in, forcing your opponent to fold. It means you can win a huge amount of chips without showdown and with no chance of losing.

I would like to illustrate this concept with the examples of two hands which I played in the Bellagio Cup 15k Main Event in July, 2009. This tournament had a perfect slow structure, so even in the late stages the play was deep enough. These two hands happened on day three. In the first one the blinds were 2,000-4,000 (500 ante). Before the hand I had 155,000 chips, which was about 2/3 of the average stack. We were nine-handed. The UTG player opened with 10,500 and I picked up K-K in second position. The reason why I just called is that my table image is usually solid - and that applied to this particular table as well. I thought that if I re-raised in this position it would kill all the possible action behind. So I called - and then the cut-off player put a big re-raise of 60,000. Everybody folded, including the original raiser, and I went all in for 155,000 and my opponent was priced to call with his A-Q suited. Nothing bad happened and I doubled up.

akravbigg.jpg

The second hand was played at the end of the same day. With 27 in the money, there were 37 left in the tournament. We were playing seven-handed, with blinds at 4,000-8,000 (1,000 ante). My stack was about 420,000, which was slightly above average. Jeff Madsen (250,000 chips) was sitting to my left, so in this hand I was on the small blind and he was the big blind. The second position player raised up to 20,000, everybody else folded to me in the small blind where I had A-K suited. The way the raiser put his chips in gave me a feeling that he was not strong, and I thought that maybe Jeff noticed it also. So I decided to call, hoping he would try to steal this pot with a re-raise. My plan was that he would raise about 75,000, then I would move all in and easily pick up about 100,000 in chips.

To my surprise he moved in with all his 250,000 chips, and the original raiser folded. Now I knew that he had a hand, but the question was how strong? I was thinking for about two minutes and made a call. I wasn't really expecting myself to fold, but I believe that if I'm taking my time to think in situations like this I'm not losing anything and am preventing myself from making bad instant decisions.

In this case the very important question was whether your opponent could have A-Q or not. If yes (and that I believed that was the case here), it's absolutely a call. If no, then it's very border line, especially when you are close to the money spots. For the showdown Jeff showed A-Q, and I won a 500,000 pot and finished the day with a comfortable 700,000 stack.

So there are two good examples of playing big hands well. Unfortunately, the next day was unlucky for me - I made two wrong decisions and finished in 19th place.

Fontainebleau Casino May Still Rise on Las Vegas Strip

The Fontainebleau Las Vegas Casino project, thought as dead as could be last week, may rise from the ashes like a phoenix, as a new lender is reportedly involved.

Play the Best Slots at Superslots Casino! The projected casino to carry the Fontainebleau brand to Las Vegas may not be a dead endeavor after all. An unnamed lender has emerged at bankruptcy hearings to offer financing to finish the casino resort if banks involved will unfreeze current loans.

The judge hearing the bankruptcy, A. Jay Cristol, urged all parties to attempt to find a workable compromise which would allow the project to go forward. He said litigating the matter would end up costing everyone hundreds of millions of dollars.

"It would be in everyone's best interest if this matter could be resolved in a prudent businesslike manner rather than through litigation," said Cristol.

Bank of America and its partners had withheld a $656 million loan to build the Fontainebleau, deciding that cost overruns and mismanagement had doomed the project. But the mysterious new lender will cover all further financing, according to rumors.

Word is that officials connected with Wynn Resorts and Harrah's Entertainment have bothe visited the construction site of the gambling venue. While Harrah's may be stretching itself to provide financing with its own situation unresolved, Wynn may be in position to provide some cash.

Frank Internet Gambling Bill Gets More Congressional Support

Four more Congressmen have agreed to co-sponsor Barney Frank's bill regulating Internet gambling.

While Barney Frank's bill proposing regulation of Internet gambling continues to await its day before committee, more support is materializing for the measure. This week, four new co-sponsors added their names in support of Frank's attempt to license and regulate online casinos and gambling sites.

There are now fifty-eight listed co-sponsors for the proposed gaming legislation. Joining the cause are Representatives Lynn Woolsey of California, William Clay of Missouri, Adam Schiff of California, and Christopher Murphy of Connecticut.

Frank had originally said the bill would be reviewed by Easter. But his Financial Services Committee has been dealing with a much higher priority, the national economy.

The advancement to committee has since been pushed back to July, then September, and now some have commented that it is unlikely the bill will be discussed before the new year arrives.

Still, the support continues to grow among Frank's fellow Congressmen, including Republicans who have crossed the aisle in the name of individual freedoms.

A second Frank bill, postponing the implementation of rules concerning the UIGEA, would have to see quick action if it is to be effective. The UIGEA implementation is scheduled for December 1st, barely sixty days away.

APPT9 Aussie Millions Day 3: Raw emotions of bubble excitement

The bubble is perhaps the tensest time in any poker tournament, with players scrambling to lock up a payday for their hours of effort at the felt.

With the bubble bursting today here at the Aussie Millions Main Event, we thought we'd first take a look at some of the more exciting bubble moments from previous years.

AM_Cards_Bubble.jpg

Cards go round and round on the bubble

Flash back to the 2010 Aussie Millions when top professional Peter Jetten sent Joseph Sevian home as the bubble in spectacular fashion.

Having put the money in preflop, Sevian's chances of cashing looked thin, running K♣K♠ into Jetten's A♦A♣. That was until he spiked top set on a flop of K♥T♦6♦, met by a roaring crowd.

Jetten explained why the flop almost surely meant a double up for Sevian: "I turned to the guy on my right and asked if he folded a king, trying to be an optimist, and he said no but I folded an ace."

The turn J♣ rolled off giving Jetten additional straight outs and the river meant a nightmare situation for Sevian - the case ace A♥ landing to make him that year's bubble boy.

Another classic bubble moment takes us to 2013 in a hand between Australian Poker Hall of Famer, Gary Benson, and perhaps the most notable player in the world, Phil Ivey.

Things looked grim for Benson when he moved all in preflop with T♦T♥, only for Ivey to wake up with J♠J♦ and make a call behind him.

Again a flopped set delivered false hope as a board of T♣Q♠K♦ vaulted Benson into the lead. He still had a serious sweat against Ivey's open-ended straight draw but with the turn 4♥ bricking off his chances were looking good. It was the 9♦ on the river though that sealed Benson's fate as Ivey administered the final blow, bursting the bubble and sending a wave of relief throughout the rest of the poker room.

Phil Ivey at this year's Aussie Millions

As the bubble loomed in the Crown Poker Room today, however, Ivey remained as one of the 73 players all hoping for a payday. Fortunately for him it was instead James Kennedy who found the rail as the official 'bubble boy'.

Kennedy was down to less than a big blind when he found himself all in from the small blind. He watched on as Victor Teng and Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang took to a A♠3♣2♦ flop. Teng bet and got Huang got out of the way, with Teng tabling A♥K♥, which was well ahead of Kennedy's Q♥J♥.

Kennedy was not greeted with any help on the turn or river, instead greeted with the cheers and applause of those who had made it into the money, securing $15,000 each.

2015AM_Bubble.jpg

James Kennedy was a gracious bubble boy

No player was as noticeably happy as young Australian Billy Liapis who shed a tear and embraced his girlfriend after having secured a spot in the money.

The largest result on Liapis' resume prior to today was for just $10,000 and now he has passed that in one swoop just for making the money of the 2015 Aussie Millions Main Event.

Now Liapis just needs to focus on making a run at the $1.6 million.

AM_Crying_Bubble.jpg

Great to see raw emotion in a poker tournament

With the bubble bursting it is expected that a few dozen players will be eliminated during the late stages of the night. To find out just how many, and who makes it through to Day 4, be sure to keep it locked on the live reports section of the APPT9 Aussie Millions page.

Battle of the Planets: bigbluffzinc picks up the pieces in $12K victory

SLOTMAGIC777 is Your $100 FREE Redeem code use banner
panthercasino.com sport betting and casino
^

The first one to the final table this evening would be the last one standing. Our final two would enter the last table at much different times as AndyUK18 was the last person to claim a second round victory in tonight's $50,000 Battle of the Planets Triple Shootout freeroll. But, bigbluffzinc smashed the second so fast, the other eight tables still had a minimum of four players playing! $12,000 taken away by the June champ bigbluffzinc who let AndyUK18 do the dirty work of eliminating player while sitting on the chip lead. Read the road to victory below.

The first round would end with Rb)bolov and latenthreat dueling for the final spot in the round of 81 and assurance of taking away $195.00 today. With the blinds at 125/250 ante 25 latenthreat min-raised from the button as Rb)bolov covered and shoved for 5,360 as latentthreat made the call for slightly less with a pair of ducks [2h][2c]. The killer deuce next to the ace in the door [Ac] [2d] [8d] [Qc] [7d] would knock Rb)bolov down to 270 chips. Those chips were donated on the next hand as 80 other players gathered up their belongings for nine new tables in round two.

bigbluffzinc wasted little time in securing the first final table seat knocking out all eight opponents in under an hour. While bigbluffzinc did not final table the SCOOP 2012 Event #29-H after ending day one third in the chipcount, the Supernova is assured a shot at a title tonight.

After Tino_Sp finished off dombomain33 in 11th place, all eyes moved to Table 6 where AndyUK18 was trying to fight off the aggressive TiltFish14 for the final open seat. Both sides would survive big all-ins with their tournament life on the line but it was AndyUK18 who would battle back and grab the last seat. As the blinds moved up to 150/300 ante 25 the pair shoved preflop with TiltFish14 covering. AndyUK18's ace high [Td][Ac] nudged out TiltFish14's [Kd][Qd] for the 13,310 chip pot on the all-low [3c] [4s] [2s] [8d] [8s] board and took the rest of the fellow UK player's chips on the subsequent hand to startup the final table below:

BOTP_063013.jpg

Seat 1: lesus86 (1500 in chips)
Seat 2: le vla enfin (1500 in chips)
Seat 3: martinez92pl (1500 in chips)
Seat 4: Tino_Sp (1500 in chips)
Seat 5: bigbluffzinc (1500 in chips)
Seat 6: AndyUK18 (1500 in chips)
Seat 7: FAIANO89 (1500 in chips)
Seat 8: bencb789 (1500 in chips)
Seat 9: Sam_2four (1500 in chips)

martinez92pl would try to rally the other eight players for a nine-way chop worth around $4K. But, other than the active railbirds, martinez92pl would not receive many replies except for a few dissenters.

A quick, but standard ending

Set over set never goes well for one player. Today that player would be Sam_2four after raising to 60 chips during the opening 10/20 blinds with pocket sevens [7d][7s] receiving two calls from Tino_Sp and le vla enfin. Tino_Sp would lead out for 118 from the big blind after the [7h][Qd][9h] flop getting Sam_2four to raise with bottom set to 310. No more finesse from Tino_Sp shoving for 1,440 as Sam_2four quickly called all-in to see Tino_Sp's flopped set of nines [9s][9d] and exit in ninth place ($775.00).

le gone

Shortly after the tournament moved into the 50/100 blind level, shorstcked le vla enfin needed chips in a hurry to stay in contention for the that $12K prize. AndyUK18 made a min-raise from early position at it folded around to le vla enfin in the small blind holding pocket fives [5h][5c] and only 675 chips total. The shortstack three-bet all-in as AndyUK18 quickly called with jacks [Jc][Jd] as both watched the [Qd] [3c] [Qs] [Ts] [2d] board miss both players to award le vla enfin $1,200.00 in eighth place.

Shortstack slayer

Knocking out le vla enifin was not enough for AndyUK18 as four hands later another Battle of the Planets contestant was sent off. martinez92pl pleaded with the table for nearly duration of the Polish player's final table for an even chop, but was eliminated short of receiving $4K after shoving 854 chips from early position holding [Th][As] into AndyUK18's pocket kings [Kd][Ks]. A king in the middle of the [Ad] [Kh] [Js] [5c] [Jh] flop was enough to send martinez92pl home in seventh place ($1,700.00).

PlatinumStar dimmed

VIP PlatinumStar FAIANO89 tried to extend the stay today after clinging to a shortstack for nearly three levels. With the blinds still at 50/100 FAIANO89 would three-bet for 500 chips over Tino_Sp's min-raise. However, bencb789 jumped in from the big blind with a shove for 822 chips to force FAIANO89 to call with [Ks][Ts]. Pocket jacks for bencb789 [Jh][Js] stood tall on the [9s] [4h] [7c] [7h] [Qd] board to win a redeeming 1,748 chip pot and knockout FAIANO89 in sixth place ($2,200.00).

Kicker issues

bigbluffzinc showing below the skills used to destroy the previous table and shrink the size of this one to four players:

RSS readers please click through to view video

Shortly after the hourly five minute break Tino_Sp tried to shove [Jc][Qs] in small blind past bigbluffzinc's [Ac][Jd] in the big blind and the [4c] [9c] [4s] [Kh] [9h] board provided finality to Tino_Sp's night in fifth place ($2,735.00).

The bully is back

AndyUK18 is making players pay for sporting a shortstack tonight. With the blinds moving up to 75/150 and just three hands after Tino_Sp's elimination, AndyUK18 would send another one to the locker room. After min raise from the cutoff, AndyUK18 would call lesus86's shove for 735 chips holding pocket aces [Ac][Ad]. Cruel twist for lesus86 who did hold a viable hand in pocket eights [8h][8c] but not good enough to take the 1,620 chip pot after [2s] [9d] [Kd] [4d] [2d] rained diamonds. lesus86 collected $3,350.00 in fourth place.

Letting Andy do the dirty work

Despite bigbluffzinc sitting on the chip lead, AndyUK18 continued knocking out the other players. Five hands from lesus86 leaving the table, AndyUK18 would min-raise from the button as bencb789 shove 1,263 chips in the middle from the small blind. bigbluffzinc tired from watching all this action took a quick nap as AndyUK18 called with pocket fives [5c][5d]. A flip against bencb789's [Ac][Qh] was over expediently as a five landed in the middle of the [Ks] [6c] [5s] [3c] [Kd] board to end bencb789's night in third place ($4,500.00).

No deal? Let's GAMBLE!

Neither player was content with sitting back and waiting for big hand versus big hand to play itself out. Both players were almost equally aggressive and had each other all-in with a chance to win the entire $12K first prize. But, due to the fateful hand below, only one would take it away:

RSS readers please click through to view video

Cracked aces [Ah][Ad] for AndyUK18 stemming from bigbluffzinc's flopped trips and rivered boat [5s][Qs] on the [5d] [5c] [Tc] [8s] [Qd] would knock AndyUK18 down to 1,668 chips. Those chips would go into the middle on the next hand preflop with [6s][Qc]. bigbluffzinc's [Qd][7d] proved the mightier as the seven kicker played on the [Td] [4d] [As] [5h] [8c] board to win the June Battle of the Planets Triple Shootout Freeroll title!

Mississippi Casino Revenue Continues Record Slide

SLOTMAGIC777 is Your $100 FREE Redeem code use banner
panthercasino.com sport betting and casino

Published on October 21, 2013 by April Gardner

For many states, the end to the economic recession brought an increase in casino gambling activity. States such as Florida, Louisiana, and Nevada have rebounded in grand fashion from the low revenue figures seen during the recession.

One state that is not experiencing the gaming revival is Mississippi. Casinos in Mississippi have been struggling to gain back customers, and they received more bad news from the Department of Revenue this week.

According to figures released Monday, casino revenue at Mississippi casinos dropped 4.4%, to $170.2 million. That figure represents the drop from the same period in 2012.

The river casinos took the worst hit, with the 18 river casinos combining to drop 10% from September 2012. The coastal casinos fared much better, increasing revenue to $88 million. The $88 million represents a 1.7% increase from last year.

The year-over-year monthly loss is miniscule when compared to the year-over-year figures. In the past 12 months, revenue was down over 75% from the state's best year during that span, back in 2007. Whether the state will ever fully recover from the recession is now being questioned.

"With the amount of expansion within the casino industry in the US over the past few years, the state's that previously held a monopoly on casino gaming have all seen revenue decreases," said analyst Harvey Grant. "And with casinos in nearly every state now, it is getting harder for Mississippi, New Jersey, and Nevada to attract the traveling gamblers they used to make a living on."

Mississippi was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina back in 2005, and worked to rebuild their casino industry. Although the casinos in Mississippi did not see the widespread destruction that occurred in Louisiana, the damage was still enough to set the casinos back a few years. When the industry started to rebound from the storm, the recession hit, and the casinos have been playing catch-up ever since.
