The poker world isn't any stranger to REG Charity, but for the sector Series of Poker Main Event they're organizing a different pledge, and PokerNews spoke to Cate Hall, who took the REG pledge last year to donate three percent of her yearly poker winnings.
With Raising for Effective Giving, the minds of the poker community was refreshed at the benefits of effective altruism and the way to sign up for #WSOP4Charity. #WSOP4Charity asks of players to pledge three percent in their potential WSOP Main Event final table earnings, and by taking the pledge they enter themselves in a draw to win a poker coaching session with Igor Kurganov, a dinner with Liv Boeree and Kurganov, or a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon.
Poker pros Boeree, Kurganov, and Philipp Gruissem stood on the base of REG Charity that has gotten support from a plethora of poker players over the years, but it's of the maximum importance to maintain this transparent charity on the forefront of the minds of poker players.
With the primary Event already right down to only some tables, the #WSOP4Charity calling may well be too late for you, but support for REG Charity could change the lives of many all around the world.
"We're seeking to encourage other poker players to take the similar pledge, and it is a very small overall percentage of your winnings however it could make a large difference within the world," Hall said. Over the years, November Niners corresponding to Martin Jacobson and Jorryt van Hoof supported REG patches at the biggest final table in all of poker, with the previous donating $250,000 after winning the $10,000,000 first-place prize.
Hall joined REG last year, and she or he explained how she decided that this was the best charity for her.
"I've been conscious about effective altruism as an idea and a movement before I got involved with REG back from my time as a lawyer," she said. "AFTER I converted to poker, I DISCOVERED out that there has been this great charity for individuals within the poker community, and structured across the financial considerations poker players have.
"I took the pledge nine months ago after I was really just starting out as a qualified poker player, and it has been an excellent easy thing for me, since you hardly even notice donating a small a part of your winnings. You do not notice the bit of money that it isn't there, but it's specialized for the organization and the sector. It's a very easy thing to do that's great."
An important characterization of REG Charity is that you are not just donating to a large organization that then decides to spend your money how they see fit.
"One of the great things about REG is that you've got the facility as a donor to channel your money into causes which are most significant to you," Hall said. "IT ISN'T a normal charity that's taken with one cause. There are various different branches they're concerned with and you may choose from within those branches what's most vital to you. The average theme is that these charities are simpler; they do more together with your money within the same space.
"The thing that I'VE primarily decided to donate to are cause building, and what are called meta charities that spread the word on effective altruism. Inform people concerning the indisputable fact that some charities are a lot better on a per-dollar basis, improving the sector and alleviating suffering. My money has primarily gone to these organizations that experience a pyramid effect on effective altruism, and they're less necessarily enthusiastic about specific causes."
Since its inception REG has done tremendous work in poverty alleviation, animal welfare, climate change, and supporting meta charities that research the most productive strategies to enhance the world.
