Last week, I shared with you news that poker public enemy #1 Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson was lobbying the home Appropriations Committee for language hostile to online poker. Per the Adelson ban plan, since our opponents know their proposed prohibition can be crushed in an open up-or-down vote, this was to be inserted in that committee’s latest budget bill. However, as a result of outstanding efforts of poker advocates and lobbyists, anti-poker Reps. Charlie Dent (R-PA) and Henry Cuellar (D-TX) quickly conceded defeat and withdrew their measure without even seeking a vote!
While it's going to seem odd that Dent, a Pennsylvania congressman, would seek to override his own state’s efforts on licensing online poker, it'll not come as a surprise to be told that Adelson’s Sands Bethlehem is in Dent‘s district. It also shouldn't come as a surprise that Dent and Cuellar pledge to do this again. Be assured that PPA can be ready for any and all backdoor attempts at a countrywide online poker prohibition.
