New Jersey lawmakers letter to NBA in full

Here's the letter in full from New Jersey State Sen. Jim Whelan and Assemblyman Vincent Mazzeo to NBA commissioner Adam Silver, proposing a surcharge of 0.25 percent on every sports bet that might go towards fighting match corruption:

Dear Commissioner Silver,We appreciate your recent comments recognizing the growth of sports betting in other jurisdictions as "inevitable." While we strongly support the legalization of sports betting in New Jersey and the commercial benefits it's going to bring to Atlantic City, we're cognizant that sports leagues just like the NBA need the mandatory resources to give protection to the integrity and fairness of games.Today, we undergo you a suggestion that we expect can assist accomplish that goal. We're proposing a .25% surcharge on each bet a gambler places. For example, if a gambler places a $100 bet, she could be charged an extra 25 cents. The monies casinos and racetracks collect from this surcharge can be devoted to the sports leagues for the needs of enforcing the integrity of games and preventing any games from "being fixed." The NBA and other sports leagues may use these dollars to rent independent investigators and monitors. This generally is a national model for sports betting. When sports wagering is eventually legalized nationwide, this surcharge would generate millions of bucks a year for the leagues. Given your openness to sports betting, we are hoping that the NBA and other sports leagues can come to an agreement with casino and racetrack operators at the collection and distribution of this surcharge.Thank you to your consideration. We might be very happy to talk to you or anyone else within the NBA about our proposal. Sincerely,  Senator Jim WhelanAssemblyman Vince Mazzeo
