With lawmakers in Connecticut readying the state for a new casino to compete with gambling expansion in neighboring Massachusetts, a third tribe in the Constitution State has indicated its desire to build a new gambling facility.
According to a report from The Day, the Kent-based Schaghticoke Tribe announced that it has formed a group to vie for the rights to build the commercial casino. A partnership between the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribes, who own the state’s two existing Las Vegas-style casinos, is also seeking approval to build.
The latter group is currently mulling over proposals in four municipalities in the Hartford area. The legislature would need to formally approval any plan for a new casino, but it has said it will.
The new MGM casino in Springfield, which is under construction, has caused concern for Connecticut, which saw gaming revenue at its two tribal casinos fall to under $2 billion two years ago. Gaming revenue was $3.2 billion in 2006. MGM has sued over not being able to compete against the tribes for a new casino in the state. Connecticut has argued that there is nothing actually barring MGM from throwing its hat into the ring.
