A VACATION cheer for Marty "TheLipoFund" Mathis, 12/24/13 Super Tuesday champ

A smaller field than usual of 356 came out for this Christmas Eve edition of the Super Tuesday, still building a $356,000 prize pool that was plenty away from the tourney's $300K buy-in. The highest 45 finishers split those riches, and after just a little over nine-and-a-half hours of play it was Marty "TheLipoFund" Mathis playing from Mexico who took down the tournament to earn a $48,819.95 payday following a four-handed final table deal. Meanwhile David "MissOracle" Yan of latest Zealand earned somewhat over $50K for his third-place finish way to the chop.

It took about five hours and QUARTER-HOUR for the cash bubble to burst, with Thomas "WushuTM" Muhlocker being the unlucky 46th-place finisher after losing a hand with J♣J♦ versus ramyon's Q♦Q♠. At that time PLATINOO occupied the highest spot within the counts, just a bit sooner than Tomatee.

A little over an hour later PLATINOO had gone out in 25th place and Tomatee had followed in 19th, with both players earning $2,670 for his or her finishes. Meanwhile with 18 players remaining David "MissOracle" Yan had moved well in front, having built a stack of just over 400,000, nearly twice that of nearest challenger jays94.

It would take well over an hour more for nine more to fall, wherein stretch MissOracle fell back to the pack and jays94 assumed the highest spot, but then Yan reclaimed the lead after winning a decent-sized pot off of jays94 at the final table bubble.

hamburg (18th), AndreAS 1005 (17th), and Jack "jackziyang" Salter (16th) each took away $3,560 for his or her finishes. ramyon (15th), ..lucky louu (14th), and StaceOP (13th) made $4,450 apiece. Then chosenwinner (12th) and JeffBaas (11th) successively went out, both picking up $5,340.

Hand-for-hand play began, and before long it was Mindalterer on one table opening with a minimum raise to 8,000 from under the gun, then Marty "TheLipoFund" Mathis reraised to 17,660 from one seat over. It folded back arond to Mindalterer who four-bet to 34,950, and Mathis called.

The flop came A♠A♦K♣, and Mindalterer led with a raffle of 14,600 which TheLipoFund called. The turn was the J♦, and this time Mindalterer bet 26,750. Mathis called once more.

The river was the 8♥. This time Mindalterer checked, and when Mathis pushed all in for his last 76,981, Mindalterer called, turning over K♠K♦ for kings stuffed with aces. Alas for Mindalterer, Mathis had A♥J♥ for aces filled with jacks, and suddenly Mindalterer was all the way down to just 25,817 (lower than six big blinds).

The next hand saw Mindalterer all in before the flop with A♦Q♦ versus jays94's J♦8♥, and the flop came A♠J♠8♣ to deliver another little bit of hard luck to Mindalterer. The turn and river didn't change anything, and with two pair jays94 knocked out Mindalterer in 10th for $5,340.

On the exact same hand at the other table, vadermike777 was typing "monster bad beat at the other table" as Andrey "ThePateychuk" Pateychuk open-raised all in from the small blind and a short-stacked KRab92 called all in from the massive blind for just 36,782. The latter had A♠9♠ versus Pateychuk's T♥5♥, however the board came J♦T♠9♥8♥5♠ to offer Pateychuk two pair, better than the nines of KRab92 who was eliminated in ninth for $6,230.

With that flurry of excitement, just eight players remained.

Seat 1: David "MissOracle" Yan (New Zealand) -- 455,140
Seat 2: Andrey "ThePateychuk" Pateychuk (Russia) -- 184,726
Seat 3: empty
Seat 4: jays94 (Canada) -- 345,829
Seat 5: pennfold72 (Sweden) -- 103,100
Seat 6: Buffett1986 (Australia) -- 193,971
Seat 7: vadermike777 (Canada) -- 40,900
Seat 8: globeSP (Brazil) -- 141,772
Seat 9: Marty "TheLipoFund" Mathis (Mexico) -- 314,562

Soon after the overall table began the blinds were 2,400/4,800 when Andrey "ThePateychuk" Pateychuk raised from late position to 9,600 and Buffett1986 called from the large blind. The flop came 6♠2♥T♠. Buffett1986 checked, Pateychuk bet 12,000, Buffett1986 raised to 32,204, Pateychuk pushed all in for 127,341, and Buffett1986 called.

Buffett1986 turned over K♦T♦ for a couple of tens while Pateychuk showed Q♠8♠ for a flush draw. The turn was the 5♦ and river the 6♥, and ThePateychuk was out in eighth.

Just three hands later the blinds had bumped as much as 2,800/5,600 when David "MissOracle" Yan raised to 11,200 from UTG, pennfold reraised to 16,800 from two seats over, and Yan called. The flop came K♥5♠A♥. MissOracle checked, pennfold72 pushed all in with the 60,800 left behind, and Yan called.

It was K♣9♣ for pennfold72 (kings) and A♣J♣ for MissOracle (aces). The turn was the 8♦ and river the 3♥, and pennfold72's run resulted in seventh.

About five minutes after that hand it was vadermike777 open-raising all in from early position for 85,200 (about 15 big blinds) and getting one caller in Marty "TheLipoFund" Mathis playing from the button. vadermike777 had 8♠6♦ and needed help against Mathis's Q♠Q♣, however the community cards came 8♦2♥9♣A♥K♥ leaving vadermike777 with a lesser pair of eights and a sixth-place finish.

The final five played a few orbits more, then a hand arose wherein Buffett1986 raised to 13,353 from the small blind, globeSP pushed for 90,025 from the large blind, and Buffett1986 called. Buffett1986 had A♦7♠ and globeSP A♣5♦. The board came J♥4♣2♠9♣T♠, meaning the kickers played and globeSP was finished in fifth.

Soon after the last four players paused the tournament to talk about a potential chop, with David "MissOracle" Yan well in front with almost 670,000 and the opposite three in close proximity with each other with jays94 at almost 394,000, Buffett1986 sitting with about 389,000, and Marty "TheLipoFund" Mathis at slightly below 327,000.

Before the host could arrive, the crowd discussed terms a little bit with all going ahead and indicating that an "ICM"-based division of the rest prize money -- leaving $6,000 for which to play -- was going to be amenable. "Yeah icm is fine with me," typed Yan, adding "merry christmas from the chip leader."

Eventually a number did come, ICM numbers were officially proposed and accepted, and play quickly resumed.

They made it to the nine-hour break, at which point a second host arrived who hadn't gotten the message that a deal had already been struck, resulting in a humorous chatbox exchange:

HostRudolfZ (Host): Hi players, did you ask for a chop assistance?
jays94: its ok we did it already
HostRudolfZ (Host): :) OK, sorry about that. Good luck and Merry Xmas!
MissOracle: rudolf has red chat
TheLipoFund: thanks rudolf
MissOracle: mind = blown
TheLipoFund: looool
jays94: np

With the chorus of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" definitely filtering during the consciousnesses of the players, the break ended and cards were back within the air.

The blinds increased to 3,600/7,200, and Marty "TheLipoFund" Mathis raised to 14,832 from first position. Buffett1986 called, then check-called a continuation bet of 16,588 from Mathis following a 5♣T♣2♠ flop. The turn was the 7♦. This time Buffett1986 led with a chance of 28,805, and TheLipoFund responded with a raise to 97,786 which Buffett1986 called.

The river brought the 6♦ and a check from Buffett1986, and Mathis took the hole to push all in for just over 250,000, with regards to 15,000 greater than what Buffett1986 had behind. The latter made the call, turning over 9♣9♠, however it wasn't ok against Mathis's A♥T♠, they usually were right down to three.

It wasn't long after that hand that David "MissOracle" Yan opened for 2x from the button to 14,400, jays94 three-bet to 38,600 from the small blind, Yan reraise-shoved for 359,879, and jays94 called.

Both players had aces, but jays94's A♦Q♦ was prior to MissOracle's A♠2♥. The J♦Q♥A♥5♦K♥ gave jays94 two pair to Yan's one, ending MissOracle's tournament in third.

Heads-up play began with Marty "TheLipoFund" Mathis enjoying the chip lead with 1,038,380 to jays94's 741,620. Mathis would soon start to whittle away at jays94's stack, and after 20 minutes' worth of hands had jays94 down under 200,000 because the blinds increased to 4,500/9,000.

Then came a hand that saw TheLipoFund open for 18,540 from the button, jays94 shove for 155,553, and Mathis call. It was Q♦9♣ for jays94 and A♣T♠ for TheLipoFund. The board came 6♥3♣A♥K♥2♠ which meant jays94 was already drawing dead by the turn, giving Mathis the hand and the tournament.

Congratulations to Marty "TheLipoFund" Mathis for taking down this week's Super Tuesday and filling his Christmas stocking with a nifty $48,819.95 first prize. The win also earns Mathis some valuable Tournament Leader Board points, especially nice for him here near the tip of 2013 as he sat in fourth within the Yearly TLB standings heading into tonight's tournament.
