Online Poker: Dan Cates Drops $260K In February

Maryland native Dan “w00ki3z” Cates dropped $260,000 on PokerStars during the month of February, according to tracking data from HighstakesDB. The losses were the most in the online poker world during the stretch.

Cates was up roughly $70,000 on the year in mid-January, but for the most part his 2016 has been lackluster thus far. Cates lost more than $300,000 in 2015, which was his first losing year online since 2009, when he lost $450,000.

Other players who had six-figure losing months were “40and7” (-$173,000), “I_Mr_U_Bean” (-$173,000), “candela2005” (-$127,000) and “supernova9” (-$126,000). Isaac “philivey2694” Haxton (-$86,000) and Ben “Sauce123” Sulsky (-$53,000) had poor months as well.

The big winners on the month were Mikael “ChaoRen160” Thuritz ($158,000), Alex “Kanu7” Millar ($157,000), Mike “gordo16” Gorodinsky ($136,000), “hhecklen” ($133,000) and “omaha4rollz” ($128,000).

There were 10 pots during February that broke the six-figure mark. The largest of the bunch was worth nearly $201,000.

At $200-$400 pot-limit Omaha on Feb. 21, “Chilax Chuck” raised under the gun to $1,400 with roughly $210,000 in their stack. “Ravenswood13” was next to act, and they three-bet to $4,800 with roughly $95,000 behind.

The next four players folded, and it was back on Chilax Chuck. They four-bet to $13,000, and Ravenswood13 elected to call.

The flop fell JSpade Suit 8Spade Suit 2Club Suit.

Chilax Chuck didn’t fire a continuation bet. Ravenswood13 decided to fire $26,500. Their opponent check-raised to $106,000, putting Ravenswood13 all in. Ravenswood13 called.

Their cards:

Ravenswood13: ASpade Suit JClub Suit 3Spade Suit 5Club Suit
Chilax Chuck: KClub Suit QDiamond Suit JDiamond Suit 10Diamond Suit

According to Card Player’s Omaha Odds Calculator, Ravenswood13 wins nearly 72 percent of the time with their top pair, top kicker and nut-flush draw. Chilax Chuck’s more or less premium preflop starting hand was out-flopped in a big way. They did have a gutshot-straight draw to go along with their outs at making two pair.

The turn was the 7Diamond Suit, which increased Ravenswood13’s equity to 77.5 percent. The 6Diamond Suit on the river wasn’t what Chilax Chuck needed, and Ravenswood13 scooped the $200,000 pot. More often than not, the board would have been ran twice here, but not this time.
